Salt water aquarium with Platys, a sucessful experiment

Dave, a novice aquarist, beamed as he carefully placed Blaky and Yellow Boy into his newly decorated 20-liter tank, a colorful nano reef tank. Eight coral stones, a vibrant live-bed, a white delicate sea fan, and a branched coral created an underwater playground. Blaky, named for his distinctive black spots, darted around, while Yellow Boy explored the yellow-tinted stones. Blue, the female with shimmering blue scales, gracefully swam between the plants.

One afternoon, a stray mosquito larva, wriggling in a jar of stagnant rainwater, became an unexpected treat. Dave watched, fascinated, as the platys eagerly devoured it. The next morning, however, a somber stillness hung over the tank. Blue floated lifelessly, her vibrant scales now dull. A wave of guilt washed over Dave. He considered alternative feeds, tuna and oat flakes, searching for a reason for the sudden death.

With a heavy heart, he buried Blue in a flowerpot in his garden. Life, however, continued. A few days later, Blaky and Yellow Boy, now inseparable, displayed the telltale signs of pregnancy.

On Dave's birthday, a tiny miracle greeted him. Miniature fish, no bigger than grains of rice, with transparent tails, hid among the leaves. The platys had reproduced, a testament to life's resilience. Overwhelmed, Dave called his friends at the pet store. They guided him through the delicate process of raising fry, explaining the specific care needed until they were four months old and ready for adoption. Dave, once a novice, was now a dedicated caretaker, his small tank teeming with new life, a birthday gift he’d never forget.
