Healthy hair
The structure of human hair consists of epithelial cells modified arranged in layers around a central medulla, or core, and covers of thin, flat scales. The root of each hair is located in an invagination of the epidermis called the hair follicle.
Hair grows from the base of the follicle and is nourished by the vessels blood vessels present in a papilla located within the follicle, which is prolongs a little at the roots of the hair. A small muscle, the arrector pili, attaches to each hair follicle.
The muscle contracts under the control of the sympathetic nervous system, making hair stand on end. Most mammals have hair tactile sensations that grow, in many cases, on the top of the head, lip and eyebrows, with the roots located on very erectile tissue innervated.
